Youth Advisory Council members hit the ground running in 2021

North Central Youth Advisory Council Members have started the year with a planning day in Charlton last Sunday.

Formed in November 2020 by the North Central LLEN, the Council is still in the establishment phase and spent time finalising its charter, as well as establishing behaviours to underpin their values as they work together in the future.

They also brainstormed an extensive list of projects that they could undertake during 2021 with the themes of social (connectivity, resilience, support), community (benefit young people where they live), and advocacy (representations on issues that matter).

Understanding Buloke Shire’s children and young people

The North Central LLEN in partnership with Buloke Shire Council presented the State of Buloke’s Children and Young People Report (SOBCYP) to members of the Buloke Early Years Network and other key stakeholders as part of a special ZOOM presentation earlier this week.

The development of the State of Buloke’s Children and Young People Report has been a combined effort of the North Central LLEN and the Buloke Shire Council to gain a better community understanding of where Buloke’s children and young people (and their families) are faring well, what community strengths can be built on, and the areas that require improvement.

Today we released our report "How work works: getting young people employment in our growing industries" - the results of 9 young interns surveying 26 employers and 250 young people in Loddon Campaspe region. We found: some good news!; advice for young people; and ideas for supporting young people in COVID-19 recovery planning. We also demonstrated a better way to include young people in the policies being written about them and their future.

The good news! There is a diversity of entry-level jobs in our region, across a wide range of industries. Despite COVID-19, many industries are growing. Employers want young employees, and young people's interests align with the jobs on offer. Young people could find opportunities in the regions that are more competitive in the city, if we use recovery planning to build projects and systems that deliver a pipeline of young workers into our growing industries.
