The School to Work program offers a range of work-based learning opportunities designed to support students in their transition from education to the workplace. These opportunities include work experience, structured workplace learning (SWL), school-based apprenticeships and traineeships (SBATs) specifically for non-government school students, workplace visits, industry tours, life skills programs, and work-readiness activities.

Engaging in work-based learning enables students to:
- Understand how their education prepares them for the world of work.
- Gain insights into employer expectations.
- Develop essential employability skills.
- Make informed decisions regarding career pathways.
- Remain motivated and successfully complete their secondary schooling.

Certain work-based learning experiences are integrated into vocational education and training (VET) programs. These programs can be incorporated within the Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE), including the VCE Vocational Major, or the Victorian Pathways Certificate.

Government schools benefit from SBAT support provided through the Head Start program. Local Learning and Employment Networks (LLENs) collaborate with Head Start hubs to facilitate work-based learning opportunities for government school students.

School staff and students can use the School to Work Portal to search for opportunities.
