Boort students and residents celebrate intergenerational connections
Residents, staff, students and community members gathered at Loddon Place last week to celebrate the conclusion of the Intergenerational program, facilitated by North Central LLEN.
Inspired by the ABC program Old People’s Home for Teenagers, the project saw Boort Year 9 students spend an hour with residents each Thursday afternoon, taking part in hands on activities designed to build empathy, connection and confidence.
Throughout the term, students and residents enjoyed a range of activities, including cupcake decorating, painting for Boortrait, creating bouquets and hosting their own version of the Commonwealth Games. Each session began with games such as guess the decade and guess the sound, bringing generations together.
Students also completed weekly “secret missions”, encouraging them to step outside their comfort zones, ask questions and have meaningful conversations with residents.
At the celebration, students took turns sharing their experiences, favourite activities and the lessons they had learned from the residents.
The presentations created some heartfelt moments, with students reflecting on advice they had received, from respecting their elders and living life to the fullest to even some relationship advice!
Students and residents also shared their perspectives on different it is for young people today, compared to when the residents were young.
The project provided a meaningful opportunity for young people and residents to connect, share stories and build friendships, with great memories created throughout the term.
